The Power of Facility Dogs

BluePath’s mission is to provide service dogs that offer safety, companionship, and opportunities for independence for autism families. While this is the primary goal of our program, some dogs may choose alternative career paths as Facility Dogs, working in educational, residential, or day-habilitation settings. Their trained skills can greatly improve students’, faculty, staff, and clients’ quality of life by enhancing therapies and reducing anxiety.

“These truly special dogs hold highly impactful positions in their schools and play multiple roles per day, based on the needs of the teachers, staff and students,” said Brittany LaChausse, BluePath’s Facilities Program Coordinator. “It has been incredible to see that a four-legged staff member can contribute so much to the daily social, emotional and educational experiences of its students.”

Griswold Elementary School in Connecticut were the proud recipients of BluePath Facility Dog Walter in September 2024. Kara McCourt, Walter’s handler and special education teacher, shares the following:

“Walter has brought happiness and joy to students suffering from anxiety and depression, some of whom had never expressed these emotions throughout their school career. For students struggling with school avoidance or worry, Walter has been a gentle encouragement, helping them walk through the doors when it felt impossible.

“Walter has eased students’ fear of dogs with his gentle nature and demeanor assuring students that dogs can truly be your best friend. And during a time when teachers are feeling overwhelmed and stressed, Walter has brought a sense of relief and calm, offering a much-needed emotional breather for all of us.”

“Working with a BluePath facility dog gives students opportunities to gain confidence and practice emotional regulation,” added LaChausse. “Kids who were struggling to come to school every day are not only showing up, but showing up ready to learn. To play a part in the success of a facility dog and their team of amazing ‘support humans’ is an experience that is beyond words.”
